An Eocairist, as Gaeilge

Irish-language Eucharist

27 Deireadh Fómhair, 27 October, 11:30

Irish-language Book of Common Prayer

Ó bunaíodh Ardeaglais Chríost in 1030, baineadh úsáid as an Laidin agus an Bhéarla mar phríomhtheanga na seirbhísí, ach ní an Ghaeilge. Ar 27 Deireadh Fómhair i mbliana, don chéad uair i stair na hArdeaglaise, beidh an phríomhsheirbhís Domhnaigh as Gaeilge. Beidh na bileogaí dátheangach go mbeidh a fhios ag cuairteoirí cad é atá ag gabháil ar aghaidh! Beidh an tUrr. Trevor Sergeant mar sheanmóirí, agus an Canónach Gary Hastings ag ceiliúradh.  Cór Chúil Aodha, as Gaeltacht iarthar Chorcaí, a bheas ag ceol don tseirbhís. Ba é an cumadóir clúiteach Seán Ó Riada a bhunaigh an cór i 1963, agus is é a mhac sin, Peadar Ó Riada atá mar orgánaí agus stiúrthóir. Fir amháin atá sa chór, agus ceolann siad idir cheol traidisiúnta agus cheol liotúirgeach agus tá áit thábhachtach acu i stair agus i scéal cheol na hÉireann. Ócáid tochtmhar agus stairiúil.

Since its establishment in 1030, the language used in the services in Christchurch Cathedral would have been either Latin or English. On 27th October, for the first time in its history, the principal Sunday service will be Irish. Leaflets will be bilingual so that our visitors will know what’s going on! Rev Trevor Sergeant will be preaching, and Canon Gary Hastings is the celebrant. The choir for the service will be Cór Chúil Aodha, from the West Cork Gaeltacht. They were founded by the famous composer Seán Ó Riada in 1963, and their director and organist is Peadar Ó Riada, his son. This male voice choir sings both traditional and liturgical music and has a very  important place in the musical  traditions of this country. A moving and historic occasion.
