Crypt Craft Market Returns – 4th June and 6th August
In the Medieval period Dublin life centred around Christ Church Cathedral and Crypt. Tucked away inside the old city walls, the area bustled with life: from monks to lawyers to trades people and toothless locals, everyone went about their daily business in the smelly, crowded streets, perhaps popping into the cathedral to swear an oath over Strongbow’s tomb, then making a foray to the crypt to stock up on tobacco or wigs before retiring to the tavern there for a few ales.
This summer, Christ Church Cathedral is recreating some of that colourful atmosphere (though with fewer smells and better teeth)! Every Thursday and Saturday lunchtime the grounds will be teeming with delicious food, courtesy of Irish Village Markets. From bratwurst to burritos, falafel to fairy cakes, there will be something for everyone.
And even more exciting, on Bank Holiday Mondays June 4th and August 6th there will be a craft market in the crypt. Running from 12pm – 5pm, stalls selling all sorts of fabulous handmade Irish craft items will help recreate that Medieval atmosphere in Dublin’s oldest structure. Admission is free and as if the market wasn’t exciting enough there are a host of other things to see including ‘The Treasures of Christ Church’ exhibition, costumes from the television series The Tudors, the famous mummified cat and rat or even the cathedral stocks!
