We were also sorry to hear of the death of Canon Billy Marshall on Thursday 25 September, and express our condolences to his wife Margaret and his wider family.

William John ‘Billy’ Marshall was educated at Omagh Academy and TCD, where he was a scholar and prizewinner. He was ordained in 1959 for the diocese of Down, serving as curate of St Columbanus’ Ballyholme, Bangor (1959-61) and, following his BD (1961), was a missionary for the Dublin University Mission in Chota Nagpur in India (1962-72). He was assistant chaplain in TCD (1973-6), when he also completed a Ph.D. (1975) on ‘The Church of North India / Pakistan’, following which he served as incumbent of Rathmichael (1976-91). He was a canon (1990) and later chancellor (1995) of Christ Church, when he was also vice-principal of the Church of Ireland Theological College (1992-2005). He wrote several books and left a commendably organised archive to the Representative Church Body Library (Ms 880) of the papers, correspondence and printed materials relating to his clerical and missionary career.
