On Sunday 14 June, we were pleased to welcome friends, supporters, and civic representatives to Christ Church for a Service of Rededication marking the completion of the restoration of the Cathedral’s historic clerestory windows. This is an important milestone within our wider programme of conservation work.

For those able to attend, it was a deeply moving afternoon. The Cathedral Choir filled the nave with music, and the Dean and Precentor led a service that reflected on both the long history of this sacred place and our shared responsibility for its care into the future. The newly restored windows stand as a striking testament to what has been achieved.

Following the service, the Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Revd Dr Michael Jackson, reflected on the significance of the occasion:

“Christ Church Cathedral has endured through the centuries because each generation has recognised its responsibility as stewards of this sacred place. The restoration of these windows is a moment to give thanks for the care and generosity that have brought us to this point, and to consider what we now choose to protect and build for the future. I am grateful to all who have made this possible, and I invite everyone who loves this Cathedral to consider how they might play their part in its continuing story.”

We were also grateful for the presence of Councillor David Coffey, representing the Lord Mayor, whose support has been essential in enabling this phase of works. He noted:

“Through the Historic Structures Fund, Dublin City Council is proud to have supported this ambitious restoration, which is part of an ongoing campaign to preserve this beautiful building for generations to come.”

The clerestory windows are an important architectural feature of the Cathedral, and their restoration is a cause for genuine celebration. It is also part of something larger. As Christ Church approaches its millennium in 2028, our Stewards of the Cathedral’s Millennium Campaign is undertaking a once-in-a-generation programme of restoration and renewal: conserving stained glass, stonework, monuments and floor tiles, and creating new cloister-inspired gardens as a place of calm and reflection in the heart of the city.
