Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral

from The Very Revd Dermot Dunne, Dean

‘The month of December can be a mixture of emotion for many of us: busy schedules, connected to family, work and school life; the stress of finances; joy at reunions with friends and family returning home to celebrate together; pain and loss when we are reminded of those no longer with us to share in the celebrations.

In this mix of emotions, we may find immensely helpful those familiar Advent themes of hope, peace, joy and love. Advent, the four weeks of spiritual preparation leading us to the celebration of Christmas, comes to us as a gift each year. Will we receive it? The invitation is always open before us: to enter into a spiritual space of resting in God’s presence and provision for us, even if only for fleeting moments in the midst of all else!’

Remembrance Prayer

Loving Heavenly Father,

As we join in celebrating Christmas, we acknowledge that, as well as joy and gratitude; there is a heaviness and emptiness in our hearts as we think of loved ones who are not with us this year. We thank you for our memories of them and all the blessings they brought into our lives.

We thank you that our loved ones are in your presence this Christmas and ask for your comfort and peace.

Amen.

Giving Tree in aid of Abolish Direct Provision

In 2025, our Giving Tree supported Abolish Direct Provision. Abolish Direct Provision Ireland is a civil society grassroots campaign. It is a collective of asylum seekers, citizens, students, organisations, and representative groups working together in a systematic manner to bring an end to Direct Provision in Ireland.

Thank you to those that spread warmth and kindness by donating items to the cathedral in support of Abolish Direct Provision.
