Church of Ireland Historical Society Meeting – 27 September 2025

THE CHURCH OF IRELAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The next meeting of the Society will be held in the Henry Roe Room (previously known as the Music Room) of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin on Saturday 27 September 2025.

Programme:

  • 10.30: Tea/Coffee and Registration
  • 11.00 am: Michael Flaherty, “‘I fear it will be impossible to keep the parish out of debt any longer without some help’: The declining footprint of the Church of Ireland in Kildare and West Wicklow, 1900-1950”
  • 12.00 pm: Philip O’Regan: ‘Archbishop King, Dean Swift and “the pursuit of advantage”.’
  • 1.00 pm: Lunch
  • 2.00 pm: Patrick Little: ‘Going underground: the Church of Ireland, 1649-1660’.
  • 3.00 pm: Book Launch and wine reception. Prof. David Hayton will launch Patrick Little (ed.), The Church of Ireland under
    the Stuarts (Dublin: Four Courts Press, 2025). The book will be available at a special conference price of 40/€40 (full price £55/€55)

Speakers:

  • Michael Flaherty is a postgraduate student at Trinity College Dublin studying for an MPhil in Early Modern History. The dissertation on which his talk is based was awarded the Helga Robinson-Hammerstein Dissertation Prize in May 2025 as the best dissertation by TCD’s Department of History.
  • Philip O’Regan is Professor of Accounting in Society and Executive Dean (Emeritus) at the University of Limerick. He is the author of Archbishop William King, 1650-1729 and the Constitution in Church and State, a political biography of King.
  • Patrick Little is an Assistant Editor at the History of Parliament Trust in London. He is the editor of The Church of Ireland under the Stuarts, which was published earlier this year’.

Registration and Attendance
Attendance is free to all paid-up members. Non-members can purchase a one-day membership for €10/£10.

Membership
The annual subscription is fixed at €40/£40 (student rate £15/€15). This includes admission to our bi-annual conferences. Subscriptions may be paid on the membership section of the Society’s website: churchofirelandhist.org

Lunch will be available in the Music Room at a cost of £10/€10.
