Napoleon III is supposed to have said that rossini petite messe is neither little, nor solemn, nor especially liturgical in spirit.
Rossini seems to have agreed, addressing God in his inscription: God – behold this poor little Mass – is it indeed music for the blest that I have just written? Or just some blessed music? Thou knowest well, I was born for comic opera. A little science, a little heart, that is all. Be merciful then, and let me into Paradise! Can there be any doubt that the composer sailed easily through the Pearly Gates?
The Petite messe solennelle is a delightful fusion of Rossiniâs operatic flair with the depth and sincerity of his religious conviction. The Culwick Choral Society is proud to present this masterpiece – in Rossiniâs original version of 1864 for two pianos and harmonium -in the beautiful acoustic and surroundings of Christ Church Cathedral on Saturday October 18th at 8pm.
Under its conductor Bernie Sherlock, the Culwick is joined by four outstanding young soloists: Rachel Croash (soprano), Anne Marie Gibbons (mezzo-soprano), Mark Tilley (tenor) and Gavan Ring (bass). The important parts for organ and piano are taken by David Bremner, assistant organist at Christ Church Cathedral, and David Leigh, assistant organist at St Patrickâs Cathedral and regular keyboard player with the RTE Concert Orchestra.
