IRISH BAROQUE ORCHESTRA presents BACH’S GOLDBERG VARIATIONS in an arrangement for strings by D. Sitkovetsky (b. 1954), at Christ Church Cathedral Dublin on 13 September 2012.
The IBO, directed by violinist Monica Huggett, is thrilled to commence their new concert season with one of Bach’s most famous and much loved works. The Goldberg Variations are usually performed by solo harpsichord. However, on the occasion of Bach’s 300th birthday (in 1985), the work was arranged for strings by virtuoso violinist, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, and it is this very special version that will be performed by the IBO in September.
Dmitry Sitkovetsky was born in Azerbaijan, but moved to Moscow at an early age where he studied at the Moscow Conservatory. Having decided at the age of 22 years, to relocate to America, Dmitry set in motion a complex plan to convince the government that he was no longer of value as a musician/composer. Dmitry subsequently arrived in New York in 1977, where he managed to continue his studies at the Juilliard School. He has since enjoyed a successful international career as a violinist, conductor, arranger, chamber musician & festival director.
Monica Huggett, the head of Juilliard’s historical performance programme, is also the IBO’s artistic director. With Monica at the helm of this performance, audiences can look forward to enjoying the beauty and eloquence of Bach’s gentle yet lively music in a unique arrangement.
